Human Trafficking Awareness Committee
According to the Florida Department of Health, statistics rank Florida as the third highest human trafficking destination in the United States with half of all trafficking victims under the age of 18 (Source).
The JLGO’s Human Trafficking Awareness Committee was formed in 2018 to raise awareness of the issue of human trafficking in the Greater Orlando community. In 2018, the committee hosted a sold-out screening of the documentary In Plain Sight. After the film screening, League and community leaders shared ways that the community could get involved in raising awareness of human trafficking. Also in 2018, the committee facilitated an informational panel for League members featuring representatives from both Florida Abolitionist and Samaritan Village.
In 2019/2020, the Human Trafficking Awareness Committee will host a second film screening. Additionally, the Committee will provide volunteer support for the Greater Orlando Human Trafficking Task Force’s 12th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day in January.
Additionally, the JLGO’s Human Trafficking Awareness Committee partners with Samaritan Village, a local non-governmental 501(c)3 organization established to stop human trafficking.
